MARAD Wants Clean Marine Partners

The U.S. DoT’s Maritime Administration is looking for partners to help reduce pollution from ports and marine vessels “through repowering, re-engining or installation of other pollution reduction technologies, or the use of alternative fuel/energy.”

“MARAD is seeking to provide cost-share funding through cooperative agreements for U.S.-flagged vessels that operate on inland or coastal waterways,” states a summary for funding opportunity number DTMA-91-R-2012-0019.

Honda Brings the Red, White & Blue

Honda’s big news for fleets is the new-for-2012 dedicated-CNG Civic Natural Gas (formerly the Civic GX), for which the manufacturer is predicting a three-fold sales increase over 2011.

The Honda CNG is powered by a modified four-cylinder, 1.8-liter engine yielding EPA-rated city/highway/ combined fuel economy of 27/38/31 miles per gasoline-gallon equivalent (GGE), a combined improvement of 10.7% from the Civic GX.

Ohio’s AFV Natural Gas Fuel Systems (SSP AFV) promoted fully engineered compressed natural gas fuel system assemblies.

“Our business plan,” the firm says, “was created to be divergent from existing component suppliers to specifically meet the need for integrated high pressure NGV fueling system design and efficient supply chain fulfillment” (emphasis added).

SCI Adding Capacity – and Propane

Structural Composites Industries, now a unit of Worthington Cylinders, continues to expand its production capacity for Type III carbon-fiber-on-aluminum compressed natural gas (and hydrogen) fuel cylinders.

And, in a departure, SCI expects to begin distribution of propane fuel vessels, from Poland’s Stako, in the U.S.

Linde for Compact LNG Fueling

Linde North America took the occasion of ACT Expo 2012 to “pre-announce” new technology, slated for availability in early 2013, for compact liquefied natural gas fueling stations with better control of LNG boil-off.

“ACT Expo provides the ideal opportunity” for Linde to promote its expertise, says Bryan Luftglass, head of strategic marketing and business development for Linde Energy Solutions.

“The peculiar thing about the liquid [alternative[ fuels market is, everyone seems to hate everyone else,” retired Gen. Wesley Clark said here yesterday, drawing chuckles from the audience.

Clark, now an energy investment advisor, urged attendees to seize the opportunity to work together and eliminate competition among themselves: “None of us can do it by ourselves, and if we don’t do it, we can’t get this economy going again.”

Quantum for Agility, Remy for Quantum

Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies had a busy time at ACT Expo, announcing a $4.8 million purchase order from Agility Fuel Systems for “lightest in the industry” Type IV compressed natural gas fuel tanks, and disclosing that it’s using motors from Remy International in the F-Drive brand parallel hybrid electric drivetrain for the plug-in Ford F-150 it displayed at the show.

The CNG purchase order is for Quantum’s line of large-diameter carbon composite tanks developed specifically to mount on the frame rail in Class 6-8 heavy duty trucks. The tanks with their new design features will be available from Agility in their integrated systems starting in August.

Ryder Adding Greenkraft and Navistar International Straight Trucks

Ryder System is expanding its pioneering natural gas truck leasing program with an order for nearly 40 more vehicles: 19 International DuraStar 4300-series trucks with 7.6-liter spark engines by Emissions Solutions, Inc. and 20 China-chassis vehicles from Greenkraft with 6.0-liter GM engines.

Greenkraft is to deliver the 20 trucks in November.

Westport for Volvo & a Better 15-Liter

Westport Innovations spread the good news that Volvo is going ahead with Westport high pressure direct injection technology for a 13-liter natural gas (diesel ignition) engine for heavy duty trucks, and also trumpeted improvements to its own, Cummins ISX-based 15-liter HD.

The Volvo product “is scheduled to launch for the North American market in 2014,” Westport said.

Toyota Tops Four Million Hybrids

Toyota Motor Corp said in Japan that its global hybrid vehicle sales topped four million units through April of this year.

Of those, 1.5 million hybrids have been sold in the U.S.

Toyota said that it currently sells 18 hybrid passenger vehicles in 80 countries and regions around the world, and that so far this year, hybrids have accounted for 15% of global sales.

GE to Open Alt Fuels Fleet Center

GE is spreading the word that it will open its 6,000-square-foot customer experience center for alternative fuel vehicles at the headquarters of its Fleet Services business in Eden Prairie, Minn. on May 31.

GE broke ground on the facility this past autumn (F&F, September 26).
