Seguin ISD Saves 33% with Propane

Texas Council and AACOG Tout the Benefits

The Seguin Independent School District in Texas is reducing its fuel costs by some 33% by operating buses on propane autogas, the Propane Council of Texas reports. The district has been operating propane-powered buses for six years.

Seguin ISD is the largest school district in Guadalupe County (immediately northeast of San Antonio), covering 365 square miles and servicing 7,556 students, ProCoT says, noting that there are 85 buses in Seguin’s fleet, including 57 diesel and 28 propane vehicles.

Seguin ISD uses 71,950 gallons of propane per year, says ProCoT, the Propane Council of Texas.

Seguin ISD uses 71,950 gallons of propane per year, says ProCoT, the Propane Council of Texas.

Seguin ISD uses 71,950 gallons of propane per year, and has installed an onsite fueling station – “a popular, affordable option,” the association says.

Texas Railroad Commission Support

“In 2008, Seguin ISD received 21 propane-powered school buses for their transportation department,” the Alamo Area Council of Governments reports. “Purchasing the alternative fuel buses was not an easy decision and was conducted for nearly a year before the purchase was made,” AACOG says.

Counting initial support from the Texas Railroad Commission and the 50¢ per gallon federal tax credit, Seguin ISD has saved $500,000 since 2008, ProCoT says.

“We plan to continue purchasing propane buses,” Seguin ISD transportation director Phia Rigney says in the ProCoT release. “The preventative maintenance saves money because propane buses use less oil and can go longer between oil changes,” she said.

More than 2,000 in Texas

Seguin ISD is just one of more than 75 Texas school districts operating buses on propane autogas, ProCoT says.

“Currently, there are more than 2,000 propane-powered buses across the state,” ProCoT education and marketing director Jackie Mason said in association’s Seguin ISD release.

“We expect that number to continue to grow,” Mason said.
