Biofuel And Biomethane ‘Lessons Learned and Pitfalls to Avoid’

The California Energy Commission is planning a Technology Merit Review “to highlight key ingredients for successful development of biofuel and biomethane projects.” The September 18 meeting in Sacramento will focus on existing and potential work funded by CEC’s ARFVTP, the Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technology Program.

CEC-logo-since1975“This workshop presents an opportunity to highlight key ingredients for success, lessons learned and pitfalls to avoid from several ARFVTP biofuel and biomethane project funding recipients,” the agency says.

Better Plans and Solicitations

“This information can benefit existing and future projects and help the Energy Commission adapt and improve future investment plans and solicitations.”

The workshop will include comments from independent peer reviewers of individual projects. The meeting “is an initial step to establish an annual Technology Merit Review for ARFVTP projects and technology sectors, which might adopt and adapt aspects of similar activities conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy.”

Janea Scott, the agency’s lead commissioner for transportation, will preside.

But Nation Could Do More for NGVs, Says Advocate

Some 73% of the fuel for natural gas vehicles in Sweden came from biogas during the first six months of 2015, according to figures from Energigas Sverige, the Swedish Gas Association. It’s an historic high, as the figure has in recent years hovered at about 60%, the organization said Friday.

Energigas Sweden wants to see more.

Energigas Sweden wants to see more.

There are more than 52,000 NGVs in Sweden, according to the release.

‘Model for the World’

“Our high proportion of biogas makes us a model for the world and shows that the green transition is fully possible,” Energigas Sweden managing director Anders Mathiasson said in the biomethane announcement.

“At the same time,” he said, “it is worrying that the rate of increase in the sale of vehicles is now decreasing.

“The government must now quickly provide information about continued tax exemption on biogas, and extension of the reduced taxable benefit,” Mathiasson said.

Luxfer Endorses CCI for Its Work on NGVs

CNG Cylinders and Related Hardware for Vehicles Being Repaired

Luxfer Gas Cylinders is spreading the word that Virginia’s Certified CNG Inspector, LLC has chosen its carbon composite compressed natural gas fuel cylinders, valves, pressure-relief devices and mounting hardware for CNG containment on vehicles being serviced and repaired.

CCI-LuxferCCI provides on-site CNG fuel system inspections and repair to commercial clients, Luxfer says, specializing in on-site, after-hours work during fleet downtimes so vehicles don’t have to be pulled from service.

CCI offers competitive pricing on Luxfer equipment, Luxfer says.

‘A Great Relationship’

“A key factor in choosing Luxfer was CCI’s in-depth knowledge and experience using Luxfer products, CCI owner Jack Stepongzi says in Luxfer’s release. “We also have a great relationship with Luxfer since they offer a quality tank, great support and are willing to listen and work with us and our customers,” he said.

Stepongzi noted the importance and economic advantages of regular inspections and said that he frequently encounters misconceptions about NHTSA/National Highway Transportation Safety Administration requirements.

“Inspections are required every three years or 36,000 miles – whichever comes first,” he said. “I’ve seen some fleets end up paying over $100,000 for labor and new parts, which could have been avoided by regular inspections.

Inspections = Opportunity

“Inspections provide you the opportunity and leverage to have equipment manufacturers quickly fix any problems noted in the inspections, ensuring your fleet can operate safely, economically and on its regular schedule.”

“We are happy to be supporting CCI by supplying market leading products to complement their high-quality, flexible service and repair for CNG fleets,” Luxfer Gas Cylinders alternative fuel business development director Mark Lawday says in his company’s CCI announcement.
