New Flyer 110 CNG Artics for NYCT/MTA

May 13, 2017 in CNG, Fleet Order, transit by Rich Piellisch  |  No Comments

They Are the Agency’s First CNG-Fueled 60-Foot Artic Buses
Under a Contract Worth $95 Million, the Manufacturer Says

New Flyer Industries disclosed a contract with New York City Transit/MTA Bus for 110 of its CNG-fueled 60-foot articulated Xcelsior buses.

“The state-funded contract is a firm order,” New Flyer said, “valued at $95 million (U.S.).”

“Since 1988, MTA has purchased over 2,200 buses from New Flyer,” executive VP for sales, marketing and customer program management Paul Smith said in a release.

Long Experience

“This will be the first time the MTA is taking delivery of compressed natural gas buses in a 60-foot configuration,” he said.

New Flyer cites “nearly 20 years of experience developing CNG systems and delivering over 8,500 CNG-powered transit buses.” The Winnipeg-based company claims “invaluable experience that benefits our customers with the most advanced CNG bus in the industry… benefits include a 20-year certified CNG tank and a fire- suppression system that comes as a standard feature on all New Flyer CNG buses.”

New Flyer noted too that it’s opened a facility in Jamestown, N.Y. facility to manufacture bus components, and that “components assembled in Jamestown will be integrated into these 110 XN60 Xcelsior CNG buses” for New York City.

Long in Gestation

The company said last year that it was bidding to supply 139 of its 60-foot CNG buses to NYCT (F&F, March 18, 2016).

Also last year, Hexagon Composites reported a long-term supply agreement with New Flyer for all-composite Type IV CNG cylinders from its Hexagon Lincoln subsidiary, now part of Agility Fuel Solutions (F&F, February 26, 2016).
