New CWI Engine Combined with RNG Seen as Viable Answer

Southern California’s Total Transportation Services, Inc., is testing a low-NOx variant of the 11.9-liter ISX12 G engine from CWI/Cummins Westport, Inc., the California Natural Gas Vehicle Coalition reports. TTSI’s re-powered Freightliner Cascadia

The low-NOx ISX12 G is a field test unit, says a CWI spokesman. It has been installed in a Freightliner Cascadia tractor. It is fueled with LNG/liquefied natural gas. TTSI is using “Redeem” brand fuel, made with RNG/renewable natural gas supplied by Clean Energy Fuels, says a Clean Energy source.

Hauler at the Forefront

TTSI has long been an alternative fuel pioneer, committing to LNG/liquefied natural gas trucks for the ports nearly a decade ago (F&F, August 18, 2008) and later testing hydrogen fuel cell trucks for drayage operations (F&F, August 1, 2011).

According the company website, TTSI currently operates 57 LNG tractors.

As Clean as a Battery Truck?

Available for order later this year, the 11.9-liter engine is expected to be certified by the California Air Resources Board to produce 90% less NOx than the current EPA standard for heavy-duty engines – “equivalent,” says Cal NGVC, “to that of a truck powered by electricity from the electrical grid.”

“The trucking industry is facing hard choices on how we are going to reduce our emissions impact, especially here in Southern California,” TTSI president and CEO Vic La Rosa says in the association article.

‘Quickest and Most Affordable Way to Cut Our NOx’

“We believe the quickest and most affordable way to cut our NOx emissions to essentially zero is with the new CWI engine and renewable natural gas (RNG).

Cummins Westport’s 11.9-liter ISX12 G hit the market in 2012/2013 (F&F, December 19, 2012). Production of the low-NOx variant – the ISX12G Near Zero? – is to start early next year.

“We’ve successfully operated natural gas trucks in the San Pedro ports since the last Clean Trucks program in 2008, and it’s great that we now have a dramatically improved engine and an even cleaner fuel with renewable natural gas,” La Rosa said.

Next Year for the Low-NOx ISX12 G

Late last year Cummins Westport began full production of the low-NOx variant of its 8.9-liter engine, offering it as the ISL G Near Zero (F&F, October 18). Engines have been shipped to bus and refuse truck OEMs. The ISX12 G low-NOx engine is based on the 12-liter ISX12 G first introduced in 2012, Cal NGVC says. Production is to start early next year.

“CWI anticipates a large demand for this heavy-duty alternative-fuel truck engine,” the association says.

With Biomethane, It’s a Game-Changer

“We understand the importance of reducing NOx emissions, especially here in California and in the middle of one of the busiest transportation corridors in the nation,” said Cummins Westport president Rob Neitzke.

“This 12-liter engine, designed for heavy-duty trucks, can also reduce GHG methane emissions by 70% or more when run on renewable natural gas,” he said.

“We are also running field tests with other fleets in other applications,” a CWI spokesman told F&F, noting that production is to commence in the first quarter of 2018.

Utility Is to Test Self-Powered Mobile Natural Gas Compressor

Southern California Gas reported a contract with Onboard Dynamics to fund the demonstration and testing of the Oregon start-up’s mobile natural gas compressor that can be used to fuel compressed natural gas vehicles “no matter where they are.”

Onboard Dynamics has developed a design that lets a portion of a natural gas-fueled engine serve as a compressor for natural gas. In addition to self-powered compressors, the scheme holds potential for natural gas vehicles that can compress their own fuel (F&F, April 26, 2016).

The concept “reduces the need for CNG cars and trucks to travel to public CNG stations and instead brings clean-burning natural gas refueling to the vehicles.”

‘Cost-Effective and Convenient’

“This mobile technology provides a cost-effective and convenient refueling solution for smaller CNG operators,” SoCalGas customer solutions and communications VP Lisa Alexander said in a release.

“This, in turn, may lead to an accelerated adoption of CNG, which would contribute to improved air quality and a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, compared to petroleum-based fuels,” she said.

Capacity Boost, or Backup

Because it is self-powered, the Onboard Dynamics compressor can act as a capacity boost for existing CNG compressor stations or as a reliable backup source during emergency events in which electrical generators are offline.

“Our technology can potentially reduce CNG production costs, increase efficiency, improve reliability and lower criteria emissions compared to previous engine-driven products,” Onboard Dynamics CEO Rita Hansen says in the SoCalGas funding announcement.

SoCalGas and Onboard Dynamics are to begin a demonstration project of the technology in the summer of 2017 with Mountain View School District in El Monte, Calif. and the Antelope Valley Schools Transportation Agency in Lancaster, Calif.

A New Infographic Too to Aid Members’ Sales Efforts

NGVAmerica’s Emissions and Environmental working group has completed a white paper and infographic highlighting the benefits of natural gas as a fuel for fleets.

The association is circulating the Fleets Run Cleaner on Natural Gas white paper “to provide an NGV industry supported consensus document on the benefits of switching to natural gas.”

The Meeting in Denver

NGVAmerica said it “hopes that these documents serve as a source for its members and the industry at large when discussing the benefits of using natural gas vehicles.”

Nearly 300 NGV industry leaders gathered in Denver earlier this month for NGVAmerica’s 28th Annual Meeting and Industry Summit. A variety of speakers provided including insight on industry mergers and gave perspectives on the current and future NGV sales market.

Volkswagen Opportunity?

Other topics included an update on the 2016 fall elections, innovation in the broader automotive industry, “and provocative insight on the future of America’s energy security.”

NGVAmerica’s State Advocacy and Technology & Develop ment committees hosted workshops on growing the market for LNG and explaining how the Volkswagen settlement may bring new funding opportunities for natural gas vehicles.
