SoCalGas Funds Onboard Dynamics

January 23, 2017 in CNG, Conference/Meeting, NGVs, Technology by Rich Piellisch  |  No Comments

Utility Is to Test Self-Powered Mobile Natural Gas Compressor

Southern California Gas reported a contract with Onboard Dynamics to fund the demonstration and testing of the Oregon start-up’s mobile natural gas compressor that can be used to fuel compressed natural gas vehicles “no matter where they are.”

Onboard Dynamics has developed a design that lets a portion of a natural gas-fueled engine serve as a compressor for natural gas. In addition to self-powered compressors, the scheme holds potential for natural gas vehicles that can compress their own fuel (F&F, April 26, 2016).

Onboard Dynamics’ natural gas-powered ‘Mobile-60’ compressor.

Onboard Dynamics’ natural gas-powered ‘Mobile-60’ compressor.

The concept “reduces the need for CNG cars and trucks to travel to public CNG stations and instead brings clean-burning natural gas refueling to the vehicles.”

‘Cost-Effective and Convenient’

“This mobile technology provides a cost-effective and convenient refueling solution for smaller CNG operators,” SoCalGas customer solutions and communications VP Lisa Alexander said in a release.

“This, in turn, may lead to an accelerated adoption of CNG, which would contribute to improved air quality and a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, compared to petroleum-based fuels,” she said.

Capacity Boost, or Backup

Because it is self-powered, the Onboard Dynamics compressor can act as a capacity boost for existing CNG compressor stations or as a reliable backup source during emergency events in which electrical generators are offline.

“Our technology can potentially reduce CNG production costs, increase efficiency, improve reliability and lower criteria emissions compared to previous engine-driven products,” Onboard Dynamics CEO Rita Hansen says in the SoCalGas funding announcement.

SoCalGas and Onboard Dynamics are to begin a demonstration project of the technology in the summer of 2017 with Mountain View School District in El Monte, Calif. and the Antelope Valley Schools Transportation Agency in Lancaster, Calif.

The registration fee for Rethink Methane 2016 is $325 – for industry. There is no fee for government and non-profit representatives.

The goal of the conference is inform stakeholders from the bioenergy, solar, wind, hydrogen, fuel cell and natural gas industries – and California policymakers – providing insight into the significant environmental, public health, and economic benefits of biomethane/renewable natural gas.

Stakeholders will also learn about changes to be made to policy, regulation and incentives to increase the production and consumption of RNG in the state.

The Debate Will Be in Full Swing

“Several renewable energy bills are on the docket for the 2016 legislative session, so the debate over the policies, regulations, and incentives that should be adopted to encourage the production and consumption of renewable methane is in full swing,” says organizer (and Fleets & Fuels publisher) GNA – Gladstein, Neandross & Associates.

“By demonstrating the viability of your products and services, you can help expand the renewable methane market and create new revenue streams for your organization.”

Rethink Methane attendees will be able to visit the Sacramento BioDigester on June 30. The facility is the largest anaerobic digestion system of its kind in North America. Learn the history of the facility, the feedstocks and regulations involved, and see how the organic waste is processed – from its arrival at the transfer station to its fueling of the haul trucks (F&F, September 29, 2013).

June 3, 2016 in CNG, Conference/Meeting, LNG, NGVs by Rich Piellisch  |  No Comments

‘World’s Biggest Natural Gas for Transportation Event’

NGV Global has selected Rotterdam for the 15th Biennial Conference and Exhibition, aka NGV Global 2017, the next world natural gas vehicles conclave. The dates are March 21-23 for the meeting billed as the “world’s biggest natural gas for transportation event,” to be held at the Ahoy Rotterdam convention center.

NGV Global 2017 has been slated for March 21-23 at the Ahoy Rotterdam convention center in The Netherlands.

NGV Global 2017 has been slated for March 21-23 at the Ahoy Rotterdam convention center in The Netherlands.

“The change of venue from St. Petersburg (Oct 2016) to Rotterdam (Mar 2017) has received strong expressions of support from NGVA Europe, NGV Italy and NGV global sponsors and members and has already captured interest as an exciting location and natural gas mobility hub,” NGV Global said today.

All Transportation Gas

As with the meeting in Russia, NGV Global 2017 is being organized by ETF/Exhibitions and Trade Fairs.

“New standards and policies are in place, the oil price is slowly but surely edging upward, emissions targets are known, gas supply is secure and the price is low, and there are exciting discussions taking place between stakeholders about the synergies of fuel supply for on-road, off-road, inland waterways and coastal shipping.

“NGV Global will lead that discussion and exploration of potential during a three-stream conference in Rotterdam: policy, technology and implementation.”

The gathering will cover not just road vehicles but also the use of natural gas as marine fuel.

Exhibition sales are under way.

MSRC: $10 Million for Near Zero NGVs

May 13, 2016 in Biomethane, Conference/Meeting, money available, NGVs, refuse, transit by Rich Piellisch  |  No Comments

Agency to Vote Thursday on Game Changer-Implementing Program
Aimed at Repowering Transit Buses and Refuse Trucks with ISLG NZ

Southern California’s Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee is to vote Thursday on a $10 million Clean Transportation Funding initiative to repower existing urban transit buses and refuse collection trucks with the new ISL G NZ – Near Zero – engine from Cummins Westport.

MSRC-logoMSRC wants to hasten deployment of the 8.9-liter engine variant  introduced and certified last year to the optional California Air Resources Board NOx emissions standard of 0.02 grams per brake-horsepower hour (F&F, September 17).

“This newly commercialized heavy-duty natural gas engine offers ‘near-zero’ emission levels for ozone precursor and participate matter criteria air pollutants – 90% lower than the current EPA heavy-duty engine standards – reductions that are of are of critical air quality importance to the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) region,” states a draft agenda for the May 19 meeting.

100 Refuse Trucks, 500 Buses?

Also according to the draft agenda, the Near Zero Engine Incentive Program will provide $7.5 million to repower transit buses with the ISL G NZ while $2.5 million will be allocated for refuse collection trucks.

MSRC expects to award $15,000 per qualifying urban transit bus and $25,000 per qualifying refuse collection truck.

In addition to the 90% NOx reduction, ‘the ISL G NZ will also meet the 2017 EPA greenhouse gas emission requirements with a 9% GHG reduction from the current ISL G,’ says Cummins Westport.

In addition to the 90% NOx reduction, ‘the ISL G NZ will also meet the 2017 EPA greenhouse gas emission requirements with a 9% GHG reduction from the current ISL G,’ says Cummins Westport.

Current plans call for a program notice to be issued on June 3. Applications will be accepted beginning July 5 and ending January 6, 2017.

‘Game Changer’

The new Cummins Westport engine, especially combined with the use of RNG/renewable natural gas-biomethane fuel, is seen as a “game changer” for the challenge of deploying heavy vehicle capable of meeting ambitious state and federal clean air and greenhouse gas emissions targets.

A detailed Game Changer white paper by Fleets & Fuels publisher Gladstein, Neandross & Associates was released at ACT Expo 2016 in Long Beach this month (F&F, May 10).
