BorgWarner HVH for Scania Hybrid Bus

September 7, 2017 in Electric Drive, Hybrids, transit by Rich Piellisch  |  No Comments

‘A Key Enabler for Parallel Hybrid Drive’

BorgWarner is promoting use of its HVH410 electric motors for the new Citywide parallel hybrid electric bus offered by Sweden’s Scania for urban transit routes. HVH stands for high voltage hairpin, a power-dense motor design acquired from Remy in 2015.

“Positioned between the clutch and gearbox in a P2 layout, the 650-volt electric motor drives the vehicle at low speeds,” BorgWarner says, “when enough energy is available.

BorgWarner HVH410 electric motor

“The motor also charges the battery by generating power while braking or driving downhill, and supports the shifting sequence in the automatic mode of automated manual transmissions. With their clean, quiet operation, HVH410 electric motors allow buses to operate in zero emission zones and noise-sensitive areas.

‘Comprehensive’ Portfolio

“As a key enabler for parallel hybrid drive concepts for commercial vehicles, BorgWarner’s HVH410 electric motors help meet both market demands and emissions regulations,” said BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems president and GM Dr. Stefan Demmerle says in a release.

“This application, as well as our development partnership for future programs with Scania, expands our comprehensive hybrid and electric product portfolio and reinforces our strong reputation as a global leader in clean and efficient technology solutions for combustion, hybrid and electric vehicles.”

‘Compact Dimensions’

The HVH410 electric motors are available as fully housed motors or as rotor/stator assemblies. Employing patented HVH stator winding technology, the “versatile and powerful” electric motors deliver a maximum torque of 2,000 Nm and a power output of up to 300 kilowatts (402 horsepower) with peak efficiencies better than 95%.

“In addition,” BorgWarner says, “compact dimensions and individually customizable stack length, cooling and winding configurations facilitate easy integration into almost all electric and hybrid applications.”

BorgWarner acquired Remy International and the HVH motor line in 2015 (F&F, July 14, 2015).

New Flyer Offers Allison IAP II Drive

August 14, 2017 in Electric Drive, Hybrids, transit by Rich Piellisch  |  No Comments

Increased Accessory Electrification for Hybrid Buses

New Flyer said Friday that it is now offering Allison Transmission’s IAP II – for increased accessory power, version two – as a “total electrification option” for components such as electric air condition on buses with Allison H 40 EPTM and H 50 EPTM hybrid drives.

“The option uses electrification to power accessory components for additional fuel economy,” New Flyer says. “The system improves on the electric hybrid’s efficiency by distributing the electric hybrid power throughout the bus.”

Allison H40/50 EP

Allison’s IAP II is further described as “a customizable electric distribution platform that provides power from the Allison electric hybrid system to accessory components such as electric air conditioning, electric air compressors, and 24-volt DC power steering systems.”

IAP II, New Flyer adds,

  • allows accessories to operate at the most efficient speeds, improving fuel economy; and
  • replaces alternator and belt with a more reliable and efficient DC-DC converter, resulting in improved fuel economy.

Brake responsiveness is improved too, as is low-speed maneuverability, due to smoother power steering. Passenger compartments cool more quickly, with no engine strain and less fuel burn.
