TTSI’s re-powered Freightliner Cascadia

The low-NOx ISX12 G is a field test unit, says a CWI spokesman. It has been installed in a Freightliner Cascadia tractor. It is fueled with LNG/liquefied natural gas. TTSI is using “Redeem” brand fuel, made with RNG/renewable natural gas supplied by Clean Energy Fuels, says a Clean Energy source.

Hauler at the Forefront

TTSI has long been an alternative fuel pioneer, committing to LNG/liquefied natural gas trucks for the ports nearly a decade ago (F&F, August 18, 2008) and later testing hydrogen fuel cell trucks for drayage operations (F&F, August 1, 2011).

According the company website, TTSI currently operates 57 LNG tractors.

As Clean as a Battery Truck?

Available for order later this year, the 11.9-liter engine is expected to be certified by the California Air Resources Board to produce 90% less NOx than the current EPA standard for heavy-duty engines – “equivalent,” says Cal NGVC, “to that of a truck powered by electricity from the electrical grid.”

“The trucking industry is facing hard choices on how we are going to reduce our emissions impact, especially here in Southern California,” TTSI president and CEO Vic La Rosa says in the association article.

‘Quickest and Most Affordable Way to Cut Our NOx’

“We believe the quickest and most affordable way to cut our NOx emissions to essentially zero is with the new CWI engine and renewable natural gas (RNG).

Cummins Westport’s 11.9-liter ISX12 G hit the market in 2012/2013 (F&F, December 19, 2012). Production of the low-NOx variant – the ISX12G Near Zero? – is to start early next year.

“We’ve successfully operated natural gas trucks in the San Pedro ports since the last Clean Trucks program in 2008, and it’s great that we now have a dramatically improved engine and an even cleaner fuel with renewable natural gas,” La Rosa said.

Next Year for the Low-NOx ISX12 G

Late last year Cummins Westport began full production of the low-NOx variant of its 8.9-liter engine, offering it as the ISL G Near Zero (F&F, October 18). Engines have been shipped to bus and refuse truck OEMs. The ISX12 G low-NOx engine is based on the 12-liter ISX12 G first introduced in 2012, Cal NGVC says. Production is to start early next year.

“CWI anticipates a large demand for this heavy-duty alternative-fuel truck engine,” the association says.

With Biomethane, It’s a Game-Changer

“We understand the importance of reducing NOx emissions, especially here in California and in the middle of one of the busiest transportation corridors in the nation,” said Cummins Westport president Rob Neitzke.

“This 12-liter engine, designed for heavy-duty trucks, can also reduce GHG methane emissions by 70% or more when run on renewable natural gas,” he said.

“We are also running field tests with other fleets in other applications,” a CWI spokesman told F&F, noting that production is to commence in the first quarter of 2018.

Wastewater Feed for Fuel for Near Zero Engine Vehicles

California’s South Coast Air Quality Management District has moved closer to supporting a $25.5 million Kore Infrastructure project to produce RNG/renewable natural gas from municipal waste-derived biomethane – and use it to power vehicles with the new Near Zero variant of the 8.9-liter Cummins Westport ISL G engine.

KoreInfrastructure-logoSCAQMD proposes to ante $1 million, plus $1.5 million from the BP Arco Settlement Projects Fund, in support of the project in Rialto, immediately west of San Bernardino. Kore’s share is $23 million.

“Kore Infrastructure is proposing to construct a new full-scale modular biomethane production facility in Rialto, using a proprietary process developed and demonstrated over a six-year period at a local wastewater plant,” AQMD says.


‘A Fully Integrated System’ for RNG Production

“The proposed facility will utilize a fully integrated system to process biosolids into RNG, utilizing biosolids from local wastewater agencies and converting the energy into RNG that can be used locally as transportation fuel in the next generation natural gas engines that are certified to achieve 90% lower NOx emissions than the existing 2010 heavy-duty engine exhaust emissions standard.”

Kore has a patented five-state process, the agency notes, consisting of material handling, drying, pyrolysis, pyrolysis gas conversion to RNG, and compression.

Game Changer

SCAQMD and partner agencies are already backing the placement of transit and refuse vehicles with the Cummins Westport ISL G NZ (F&F, May 13), and shortly after the engine’s certification was announced last year moved to support development of a Near Zero variant of the 11.9-liter ISX12 G (F&F, October 13, 2015).

Advantages of the Near Zero-biomethane combination of combination have been detailed by Fleets & Fuels publisher Gladstein, Neandross & Associates in a 192-page white paper dubbed Game Changer (F&F, May 10). SCAQMD helped fund GNA’s Game Changer initiative, as did the Southern California Gas and Pacific Gas and Electric utilities, the California Natural Gas Vehicle Partnership, the American Gas Association, Agility Fuel Systems and Clean Energy Fuels.
