Surface Transportation Law Allows Heavier Natural Gas Trucks

Trucks fueled by compressed natural gas or liquefied natural gas may now be 2,000 pounds heavier than diesels, making up for some of the loss of payload suffered by the clean fuel vehicles. Passage of the five-year Fixing America’s Surface Transportation law will help advance natural gas as a transportation fuel, says NGVAmerica.

Fleets & Fuel Suppliers Are Learning How to Take 
Advantage

Fleets and alternative fuel suppliers are tapping into credit trading and funding programs that come from California’s AB 32 Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006. The Low Carbon Fuel Standard and cap-and-trade program are offering incentives for adopting renewable diesel, renewable natural gas, advanced biofuels, and clean vehicles. This fall, California Air Resources Board voted to readopt LCFS, and several states and Canadian provinces are considering adopting similar programs.

State May Also Impose a Fee on Alternative Fuel Vehicles

The Georgia legislature has approved a bill that would eliminate the state’s $5,000 tax credit on alterative vehicles. The legislation would impose road use fees of $200 on consumers and $300 on business for alterative fuel vehicles operated in the state (up from $70 today), the Atlanta Electric Vehicle Development Coalition reports.

Separately, a Senate Finance subcommittee took testimony from industry experts, including Rich Kassel, senior VP with Fleets & Fuels publisher Gladstein, Neandross & Associates, at a hearing titled Natural Gas Vehicles: Fueling American Jobs, Enhancing Energy Security, and Achieving Emissions Benefits.
