Ford is adding workplace chargers, building on an installation program started in 2014.

Ford says it currently has 145 units available for employee use at 43 Ford offices and manufacturing facilities in six states and Canada. “There are plans to install 20 more in the near future,” states a release, “with ongoing discussions to increase the number in the long term.”

“Providing a charging network at Ford facilities not only benefits our employees, but builds upon our commitment to the electrification program and developing environmentally conscious vehicles,” Ford’s Cynthia Williams, associate director for environmental and regulatory planning, said in a release.

“Ford is striving to deliver quality products and sustainable manufacturing, and to make eco-conscious vehicles easier to use,” she said.

Since installing the first workplace charging station last year, Ford and its employees have saved more than 6,000 gallons of gasoline, enough to fill a Ford Fusion Energi 428 times, the company says. The system is also capable of diverting 70 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually when using green energy sources.

92 Megawatts Delivered

More than 349 Ford employees are using the charging stations, which have delivered nearly 92,000 kilowatt-hours of energy, enough to power up to 10 homes annually.

Earlier this year Ford teamed with DTE Energy to build one of Michigan’s largest solar arrays at its company headquarters. DTE Energy funded the 360 covered parking spaces under the 1.1-megawatt-capacity solar array which helps power buildings at the Ford complex. The installation includes 20 EV charging stations.

Ford announced its workplace EVSE expansion plans to coincide with the California Plug-in Electric Vehicle Collaborative’s “Drive the Dream 2015” event on October 15.
