NBB Sets Goal of 10% On-Road Diesel Market Share by 2022

Calling it “10×22,” the National Biodiesel Board has set a goal to achieve a 10% share of the national on-road diesel market by 2022. “It is not about replacing every drop of petroleum, it is about continuing to diversify transportation energy so we can meet our needs affordably and sustainably,” said NBB CEO Joe Jobe said in a release at his organization’s annual meeting and convention in Las Vegas last week.

“Biodiesel will play an increasing role to help protect fuel consumers and the U.S. economy from unstable energy markets that are grossly distorted by political factors in the most politically unstable region in the world and by nationalized oil companies of totalitarian regimes,” Jobe said.

NBB notes that eight years ago it set a goal to be 5% of the diesel fuel supply by 2015, “a goal then viewed as aggressive.” Now, “with a billion gallons produced in 2011 and 2012, the biodiesel industry is well on its way to achieve that goal and possibly hit it earlier than expected.”

“No one could have predicted the changes and challenges of this industry, but we have been deliberate and intentional as we map our potential,” Jobe said. “This year, biodiesel marks 20 years for the trade association, 10 years for the conference and lays out the vision for the next ten years to come.”

New Fuel-Finding App

“The goal is intended to be a stretch but yet attainable,” NBB said.

The orgnaization also took the occasion of its annual meeting in Las Vegas last week to introduce the BiodieselNow application for Apple and Android devices, allowing users to find biodiesel fueling stations and track fuel purchases.

“This app puts America’s advanced biofuel in the palm of your hand,” said NBB operations director Doug Whitehead. “We feel it’s important to help users find those retail locations and improve communication between NBB and the industry.”

Besides quickly locating biodiesel fueling stations and logging their biodiesel use, BiodieselNow app users can stay up-to-date on the latest biodiesel news, including federal and state regulations. And, every gallon of fuel purchased earns biodiesel reward points that are redeemable toward biodiesel merchandise in NBB’s online store.

Next year’s NBB convention has been slated for January 20-23, 2014 in San Diego.
