A Freightliner Cascadia 113-inch BBC day cab tractor powered by the new Cummins Westport ISX12 G natural gas engine took off from ACT Expo Thursday, headed east on the manufacturer’s first-ever heavy duty U.S. crossing –fueled all the way by public-access CNG.
“We wanted to show the status of natural gas infrastructure,” Daimler Trucks marketing strategy GM David Hames said Wednesday. The truck will stop at roughly 700- to 750-mile intervals to fuel – “entirely on public fueling stations,” he said.
It is hauling a 30,000-lb. load of paper in a 53-foot trailer to a recycling plant near Washington, D.C.
Besides the new 11.9-liter, 400-horsepower/1,450-foot-lb torque ISX12 G engine, the Cascadia tractor features an Allison 4000HS transmission and CNG tank installations from Agility Fuel Systems – 155 diesel gallon equivalent total with right and left 40-DGE rail-mounted and single 75-DGE back-of-cab assemblies.
The vehicle (repainted for ACT Expo!) has some 70,000 miles on it, having been tested already by customers including C.R. England, says Freightliner product marketing segment manager Greg Treinen.
The LA to DC on CNG route is Long Beach to Phoenix via the I-10, then north to the I-40 and Albuquerque and across the Texas Panhandle and southern heartland to North Carolina. From there the route follows I-85 and I-95 to Washington.
The itinerary includes Freightliner dealerships in Arizona, Oklahoma City, Little Rock, and Nashville, and at the Daimler Trucks North America corporate office in Fort Mill, S.C. near Charlotte, N.C.
The LA to DC on CNG tour’s www.freightlinergreen.com website includes drivers’ blog entries, photos and videos, fuel cost savings information and greenhouse gas reduction estimates.
Agility, Allison, Cummins Westport, Ryder, Trillium CNG and ACT Expo organizer Gladstein, Neandross and Associates (GNA) are LA to DC on CNG tour sponsors.
The LA to DC on CNG tour and the Cascadia 113 tractor will feature in Daimler Trucks-Freightliner media and dealer events planned for the end of this month at the Gaylord National Resort outside Washington.
And also at ACT Expo last week, Freightliner announced the Coalition for Clean Air’s endorsement of the LA to DC on CNG tour. The Los Angeles-based nonprofit is honoring Freightliner along with Jay Leno, the Port of Los Angeles, LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Congresswoman Janice Hahn at its June 21 California Air Quality Awards.
