Target Is an Engine for Light and Medium Duty Trucks & Buses

Westport Innovations (Toronto:WPT or NASDAQ:WPRT) reports an agreement with India’s Tata Motors to develop a natural gas engine for light and medium duty trucks and buses. The Westport Innovations announcement makes reference to both liquefied natural gas and compressed natural gas.

Tata’€™s Starbus 40 CNG is currently available with 3.8-liter, 83-horsepower Tata engine.

“Westport is developing a next generation engine technology for integration into a new engine platform with Tata Motors,” Westport executive VP Nicholas Sonntag said in a release. “This is a great opportunity to work with India’s largest engine manufacturer in a fast-growing marketplace demanding cost-effective and environmentally conscious solutions.

‘Already in the Forefront’

“Our development schedule is accelerated and we believe it can be accomplished given the substantive market size and interest in natural gas vehicles in India,” Sonntag said.

Ravi Pisharody, executive director for commercial vehicles with Tata, said that as the national CNG and LNG fueling infrastructure develops, so does a need for innovative, low cost, reliable vehicle technologies.

“Tata Motors is already in the forefront in this area,” Pisharody said.

Upon commercialization, Westport is to supply key natural gas engine components based on the proprietary technology the two companies develop.
