F-550 First for Collaboration with Caseco & Clear Sky CNG

Seattle’s World CNG is talking up a new dedicated-compressed natural gas Ford F-550 with a crane service body. The vehicle has a single-fill range of up to 350 miles “and outperforms the gasoline model at near-maximum loads of 19,500 pounds,” World CNG says.

World CNG’s key collaborators on the dedicated-CNG F-550 are Caseco Manufacturing Oklahoma City’s ClearSkyCNG.

Chesapeake Energy is the initial customer.

“Critical to the success of the project were service body manufacturer Caseco Manufacturing and World CNG’s Oklahoma City certified install partner Clear Sky CNG,” World CNG says.

Twin Type IV Lincoln Composites cylinders, housed in a space-efficient I-mount cross box designed and built by Caseco, yield a combined 58.6 gasoline gallon equivalents of fuel storage.

Two 21- by 80-inch Type IV Lincoln CNG cylinders hold 58.6 gasoline gallon equivalents of fuel for up to 350 miles of single-fill range.

“World CNG’s new F-550 dedicated CNG conversions combine the rugged durability of the Caseco service body with the versatility of our custom-designed natural gas fuel systems to offer these fleets a safe and reliable natural gas work vehicle,” World CNG sales and business development VP Josh Hosford says in his company’s announcement.

F-450 and F-650 Too

“Chesapeake would not be able to convert its fleet to run on CNG without a variety of vehicle options, including the Ford F-550,” specialty equipment manager Dale Sanderson says in the World CNG release. Chesapeake is deliberately converting its fleet of nearly 6,000 vehicles to CNG (F&F, April 27).

“These conversions typically pay for themselves in eighteen months,” Hosford said. “Because our design focuses on range and drivability, we expect very strong demand for this product in 2013.”

In addition to the Ford F550 configuration, World CNG is promoting U.S. EPA- and California Air Resources Board-certified dedicated CNG conversions of Ford F-450 and F-650 trucks. Each is “custom-designed to allow for a variety of box and service body options to suit utility/municipal fleets, private contractors, and cargo delivery services.”

Three dual tank configurations are available, each providing 250 to 350 miles of estimated range. World CNG offers conversions for model years 2011 and 2012 and for F-450 and F-550 vehicles up to 19,500 lbs. maximum GVW and the F-650 model up to 30,000 lbs. maximum GVW. Model year 2013 trucks are available for pre-order.

World CNG’s Ford trucks have a Landi Renzo USA fuel system, Hosford told F&F.
