550 CNG Xcelsior 40-Footers with Options for 350 More,
ISL G Engines by CWI and Type IV Fuel Tanks by Lincoln
New Flyer Industries has moved a big step closer to supplying as many as 900 compressed natural gas buses to LA Metro, as the agency has issued a letter of Intent to Award a contract, worth a reported $302.9 million, for the initial 550-unit buy.
New Flyer (Toronto:NFI) thus gets back in with the nation’s largest CNG bus operator, which in recent years had bought primarily from North American Bus Industries and the now-shuttered Orion unit of Daimler. If the contract is finalized, New Flyer will supply its CNG Xcelsior model low-floor vehicles.
The New Flyer buses will have 8.9-liter ISL G engines by Cummins Westport, Inc. and Type IV all-composite CNG fuel cylinders by Lincoln Composites.
The LA Metro staff recommendation goes next to an agency systems and safety operations committee meeting slated for January 17, and to the board on January 24 for final approval.
LA Metro said in floating solicitation OP33202869 last year that it plans on deploying 275 new CNG buses in 2014 and 2015, with options for 250 in 2016 and 100 for contract operators, making a possible total of 900 (F&F, March 26).
