Buy Augments Luxfer’s Own Efforts for Type IV Cylinders,
Lightweight Tanks to Be Offered Primarily for Class 8 Trucks
Luxfer has acquired Utah’s Vexxel Composites, which manufactures Type IV all-composite compressed natural gas fuel cylinders. The buy broadens Luxfer’s product line beyond its well known aluminum lined Type III tanks, complementing its long-gestating efforts in Type IVs.
“This acquisition provides our gas cylinder business with a facility purpose-built for the manufacture of new Type IV composite cylinder products, which will be targeted primarily at the Class 8 heavy-duty truck market, where a high rate of conversion from diesel to CNG is widely anticipated,” Luxfer Group CEO Brian Purves said in a release.
“Luxfer is in final stages of developing a new range of larger-diameter Type IV cylinders for growing CNG markets to complement its existing lightweight range of Type III aluminum-lined cylinder products and systems,” he said.
4,000-Unit Capacity Boost
“Vexxel’s proven engineering and technological capabilities are highly complementary to Luxfer, especially their expertise in manufacturing Type IV cylinders,” said Luxfer Gas Cylinders North America president Andy Butcher.
“Acquiring the business adds another 4,000 units per year to Luxfer’s CNG production capacity, and we will benefit from their highly trained workforce and integrated facilities.
“Most importantly, we are now well positioned to launch our premium Type IV design, which will be the lightest in weight and also extremely tough and durable,” Butcher said.
“Investment for equipment and working capital will fuel our growth, and the future looks bright,” Vexxel president Wayne Clark says in the Luxfer announcement.
“As part of Luxfer, our business will now operate under the name Luxfer Utah.”
Luxfer markets CNG cylinders under the tradename G-Stor Pro. The company acquired Canadian Type III tank manufacturer Dynetek, including a factory in Germany for Dynecell brand cylinders, in autumn 2012 (F&F, October 3, 2012).
