To Be Configured for REPTO – Rear Engine Power Takeoff

McNeilus reported the sale of 40 of its compressed natural gas-fueled Bridgemaster ready-mix trucks to Houston-based Argos USA. The Peterbilt-chassis trucks feature an integrated McNeilus NGen bran next generation CNG fuel system array. They are the first CNG trucks for Argos, McNeilus says.

They are also the first mixers to employ the 11.9-liter ISX12 G engine from Cummins Westport, says McNeilus sales manager Kevin Dunn. Availability of the engine with REPTO – rear engine power takeoff – was key to the application, he told F&F.

“These 40 McNeilus Bridgemaster trucks are the first-ever CNG trucks purchased by Argos worldwide,” Argos USA sourcing manager Daryl Mizell says in the McNeilus announcement. “We challenged several manufacturers to present a well-configured CNG ready-mix vehicle to us. After careful deliberation, we determined that the McNeilus CNG package is the best one available at this time.”

“The purchase reflects our management team’s commitment to go green,” Mizell said.

“We’ve engineered and installed CNG power on more than 8,000 trucks in the field, and that experience translates to alternative-fuel systems that work hard for our customers,” said Oshkosh Corp senior VP Brad Nelson, who presides over the McNeilus parent’s commercial business segment.

Twenty of the McNeilus CNG mixers vehicles are for Argos operations in Houston, and the remaining 20 will be delivered to facilities just outside of Dallas. Argos is building dedicated fueling stations – each with 25 fill posts – at both locations. The trucks will plug in at the end of each shift and time-fill overnight.

Each of the Peterbilt-based McNeilus trucks features a 60 DGE/diesel gallon equivalent CNG tank, and a McNeilus CNG cylinder assembly built with CNC-formed high-pressure lines, compression fittings, “and fewer connection points to deliver more consistent and reliable fuel flow.”

McNeilus is using Type IV CNG cylinders from Hexagon Lincoln. The lightweight tanks are mounted in long-lasting storage pods with all-aluminum tank covers. The fuel control module is designed for either fast-filling or time-filling to fit customer preferences, McNeilus says.

The trucks have automatic transmissions, an anti-roll stability system, and wireless mixer controls. They have five axles and are outfitted with an 11-cubic yard McNeilus drum and Bridgemaster tag axle.

The new CNG trucks are to be delivered in early May, says McNeilus VP Tom Harris.

Argos USA, McNeilus says, employs more than 2,300 people at its offices and 238 concrete plant locations, three cement plants and grinding stations, and 10 cement terminals. Argos has facilities in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia.
