Customer Claims Diesel Equivalence with 100% Natural Gas

Quantum Fuel Systems says it has delivered “several pre-production units of an advanced CNG fuel storage and delivery system, including the control software for the fuel system and engine,” to Arizona’s Zhro Solutions. The news follows word from Quantum last year that it had secured $3.2 million in new agreements with Zhro, in addition to $2.6 million disclosed earlier.

Quantum reported agreements worth nearly $6 million with Arizona’s Zhro last year, and said this week that it has commenced deliveries.

Chandler, Ariz-based Zhro is a unit of Advanced Green Innovations. The company claims “the world’s first non-invasive diesel to natural gas engine conversion kit with no loss of engine performance.” The firm has been extremely chary with details, not even saying whether its design maintains the diesel cycle.

It’s a “revolutionary natural gas injection/engine conversion system,” Quantum says, for “robust and cost-effective aftermarket conversions of heavy duty diesel fleets to run on natural gas.” Quantum hardware, including its Q-Lite brand Type IV compressed natural gas fuel cylinders, and control equipment, will be used for both on-road testing on heavy duty trucks and bench testing.

‘There Will Be Spark’

“Zhro has developed an operating and marketing model to accelerate the commercial launch of their breakthrough technology and has already contracted with a significant number of North American distributors for sales and installation of Zhro’s fuel injector/engine conversion system,” Quantum says.

“We have our own combustion regime,” Zhro COO John Madrigal told F&F. “We’ll be 100% natural gas,” he says. “There will be spark.”

Spark plugs? No comment.

Zhro is pronounced like “zero.”

Quantum also said this month that it has received a $5.3 million order for its large-diameter Q-Lite CNG storage tanks for Class 8 trucks, with “certain add-on features that could drive the total value of the order to in excess of $6.0 million.”
