CNG, LNG and DME at Next Week’s Show in Louisville
Volvo Trucks has promised to bring its full range of heavy duty vehicles to the 2014 Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Ky. next week. The company’s display is to include 12 vehicles spanning the regional haul, long haul, heavy haul and vocational segments of the Class 8 market.
“The innumerable intricacies that exist between various segments require continued development of application-specific vehicles and specifications,” North American sales and marketing president Göran Nyberg says in a releaes.
“We’ve taken the same comprehensive approach with our alternative fuels strategy and work toward offering a range of engine and fuel options that consider operational and geographic needs and infrastructure realities,” he said.
Volvo’s alt fuel offerings MATS 2014 are
- the Volvo VNL 300 CNG with 400-horsepower 11.9-liter Cummins Westport ISX12 G engine with 10-speed Eaton Fuller transmission;
- the Volvo VNL 300 LNG with 455-horsepower Volvo D13-LNG (compression ignition) engine with Volvo I-Shift AMT transmission; and
- the Volvo VNL 300 DME with 435-horsepower Volvo D13-DME engine with Volvo I-Shift AMT transmission.
Volvo’s VNM and VNL models are available with spark-ignited gas engines powered by compressed natural gas or liquefied natural gas.
“While spark-ignited engines are meeting near-term market demand, Volvo is also developing a proprietary compression ignition LNG engine and an engine fueled by dimethyl ether (DME), made from natural gas or a variety of domestic sources,” states the MATS release.
Both engines are part of Volvo’s long-term “Blue Power” alternative fuels strategy to address future demand as it eventually grows within the broader heavy-duty market.
MATS 2014 runs March 27-29 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville.
