Landi Renzo USA and partner Baker Electromotive are placing trucks with re-manufactured dual fuel engines with Freedom Transport of Illinois. The compressed natural gas-diesel vehicles are Class 8 Freightliner Coronado gliders fitted with factory re-manufactured, pre-EGR, 12.7-liter Detroit Diesel Series 60 engines.

Freedom has one truck in hand and has purchased the gliders for another nine, says Baker Electromotive chief Skip Baker. The multi-vendor set-up “allows us to produce an OEM-level truck using an aftermarket strategy,” he says.

“We make it brand new and then we displace up to half the diesel fuel,” Baker told F&F.

The engines are installed by Dave Syverson Truck in Albert Lea, Minn., he adds. Baker Electromotive installs the Landi Renzo dual fuel hardware – dubbed DNG, for dual fuel CNG – and Baker-designed CNG cylinder assemblies.

‘First OEM-Class’ System

“By fueling with DNG, Freedom has an attractive return on investment, while reducing their consumption of diesel fuel,” Landi says.

“Freedom is evaluating a combination of new dual fuel CNG trucks and dedicated CNG trucks in their fleet to achieve optimum fuels savings, driving range, and productivity,” Freedom president Bob Orr says in the Landi Renzo release. “Baker has provided the first OEM-class DNG system of the ones that we have operated,” he said.

Landi Renzo hardware includes an ECU capable of interfacing with diesel electronics, pressure regulator, fuel injectors, fuel pump actuators, and accelerator pedal interfaces. Landi Renzo secured U.S. EPA OUL/outside useful life approval of the DNG system late last year (F&F, November 9).

Family-owned Freedom Transport, notes Landi, has a diverse fleet of trucks pulling end dumps, belly dumps, flatbeds, pneumatic tankers, tippers and liquid tankers, “faithfully serving the mining, construction, manufacturing and waste hauling industries.”

Baker has used CNG cylinders from 3M and Quantum for the dual fuel Freedom Transport vehicles.
