T680 Joins the T660 and T800 Short Hood with ISX12 G Engine,
Early Order for 20 by LNG Shipping Pioneer Affiliate Interstate
Kenworth Truck said Tuesday that it’s taking orders for its T680 tractor fueled by compressed natural gas or liquefied natural gas. And Fleets & Fuels has learned of an extremely notable early order.
The 52-inch sleeper version of the CNG truck with 11.9-liter Cummins Westport ISX12 G engine was unveiled at this year’s Mid-America Trucking Show in Kentucky, and was subsequently shown at ACT Expo 2014 in Long Beach, Calif.
The truck is also available as a day cab or 76-inch sleeper. The spark-ignition ISX12 G engine is rated up to 400 horsepower and 1,450 foot-pounds of torque of torque.
Ten for California, Ten for Washington
An early order for 20 LNG-fueled T680s has been placed by Tacoma, Wash.-based Interstate Distributor. Interstate is a subsidiary of Saltchuk, which also owns the shipping company Tote.
Tote is converting two large container ships to LNG for the Pacific Northwest and is building two LNG ships for the Puerto Rico trade (see F&F’s companion publication, HHP Insight).
Interstate is taking ten LNG-fueled T680 day cabs for service in California and ten 52-inch regional sleepers for Washington State, says John Bernadicou of dealer Papé Kenworth in French Camp, Calif.
“The new, natural-gas powered Kenworth T680 especially appeals to truck fleets and operators interested in low cost of operation opportunities from the effective combination of the T680’s fuel-saving aerodynamics and cost-efficient natural gas fuel,” Kenworth national sales manager for specialty markets Andy Douglas said in a release.
