LNG and CNG Tractors in Nine U.S. States and Canada

Natural gas trucks operated by Ryder System have now logged more than 30 million miles. The Ryder NGV fleet consists of liquefied natural gas and compressed natural gas tractors serving customers in California, New York, Michigan, Texas, Arizona, Utah, Maryland, Georgia and Louisiana, as well as in Canada.

Where it all began: Gladstein, Neandross and Associates CEO Erik Neandross, California Energy Commission alternative fuel and vehicle technology program manager Peter Ward, Ryder System group director of vehicle supply management Scott Perry, U.S. Department of Energy-Clean Cities national director Dennis Smith, Sanbag VP and Southern California Association of Governments president Larry McCallon, and Ryder sales VP Alex Madrinkian cut the big ribbon as Ryder gets ready to rent natural gas-fueled trucks in Rancho Dominguez, Calif. on May 4, 2011.

“Since deploying its natural gas vehicle program in 2011, Ryder has replaced approximately 4.6 million gallons of diesel fuel,” states a release.

“We continue to see demand for natural gas vehicles from businesses looking to reduce costs and advance the environmental sustainability of their fleets,” Ryder global fleet management solutions president Dennis Cooke said in the milestone announcement.

‘Extensive Experience’

“When companies outsource to Ryder, they get the benefits of our extensive experience operating and maintaining natural gas fleets, so they can reduce risk, maximize performance and speed return on investment,” he said.

The commitment to 66 Cummins Westport ISX12 G-powered Freightliner trucks with Anheuser-Busch in Houston marks the beer company’s ‘first conversion of an entire fleet and represents a significant milestone in demonstrating the company’s commitment to reducing environmental impact in logistics.’

Ryder placed 66 Cummins Westport ISX12 G-powered Freightliner trucks with Anheuser-Busch in Houston this past fall (F&F, September 4).

Ryder notes that customers can tap into an extensive knowledge of natural gas and rapidly evolving alternative fuels maintenance network, with trained and experienced technicians, for the safe operation, maintenance, and fueling of NGVs. The Ryder alt fuels sales team “can also help businesses determine which vehicle configurations work best for their specific applications.”

GNA Helped Out

Ryder actively monitors public and private incentive programs throughout the U.S. and Canada to leverage those areas that offer incentives.

The NGV program at Ryder got its start as Gladstein, Neandross & Associates, now the publisher of Fleets & Fuels, helped secure key grants worth nearly $20 million through entities including Sanbag, San Bernardino Associated Governments. The program was launched in connection with GNA’s first ACT Expo, in Southern California in May 2011.

Ryder continues to operate NGV fueling stations at its Fontana and Orange, Calif., service locations, and offers LNG at its Fulton, Ga. maintenance facility.

For those interested in seeing alt fuel history made again, ACT Expo 2015 takes place May 4-7 at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas.
