G-Stor Pro Type IIIs for Some 200 Vehicles in 2014, More to Come

Luxfer is promoting use of its G-Stor Pro brand Type III compressed natural gas fuel cylinders by Green Alternative Systems in Elkhart, Ind. GAS is using the Luxfer tanks to convert a fleet of Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp trucks to CNG operation.

“The vehicles will become part of the growing fleet of CNG-powered package delivery trucks deployed by a major transportation company,” states the announcement – which included a photo of vehicles painted Brown.

Approximately 200 trucks were put into service in 2014, with additional conversions scheduled this year, Luxfer says. Each truck is fitted with two CNG 16-by-78-inch cylinders manufactured in Riverside, Calif.

Lightweight and Long Life

“A primary reason we chose these Luxfer cylinders is that they’re the lightest-weight Type 3 cylinders on the market – 16% lighter than other cylinders we considered,” GAS general manager Mark Matijevich says in the Luxfer announcement.

“Luxfer was also the only company that offered cylinders with a 25-year service life, which was another factor in our decision,” he said.

Two Sources of Supply

The vehicles have 60-liter GM engines converted to CNG operation using Landi Renzo USA equipment, Matijevich told F&F.

Armando Ramirez, Luxfer sales manager for the alternative fuel market, notes in the release that Luxfer produced CNG tanks in Calgary, too – an important “security of supply” consideration.
