The firms are launching the new partnership as “the industry’s only total solution for compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel systems for Class 6-8 vehicles in North America.”

Innovative compressed natural gas fuel systems are being designed and manufactured at a state-of-the-art facility near Fort Worth using 3M tank technology. Installation facilities are to be “strategically located in close proximity to major truck OEM manufacturing plants to accelerate installation and delivery for customers.”

More Than 100 Locations

Sales and service support will be available at more than 100 locations coast-to-coast.

Rush Enterprises boasts the largest network of commercial vehicle dealerships in the U.S. It’s perhaps best known for Peterbilt, but also represents Navistar International/IC Bus, Hino, Isuzu, Ford, and Blue Bird. The company is making a firm commitment to natural gas fuel (F&F, November 26).

“Since 2005,” says chairman, CEO and president W.M. “Rusty” Rush, “our alternative fuel sales specialists have sold more than 3,380 units, with 46% of those sold in the past two years, so we see popularity increasing.

3M Envisions, Lighter, Cheaper CNG Fuel Cylinders

“We anticipate that by 2017, 8% to 10% of industry sales will be natural gas vehicles,” he told F&F.

Materials specialist 3M has developed matrix resin technology for all-composite Type IV fuel cylinders that’s said to better transmit the properties of carbon fiber, allowing CNG fuel cylinders to be made with less of the costly strength material, thus reducing both weight and cost.

3M said last year that its cylinders would be produced at the new Xperion manufacturing facility in Heath, Ohio (F&F, June 16, 2014).

Rusty Rush is a Featured Speaker this year’s ACT Expo 2015. He is scheduled to address the general session on the morning of Wednesday, May 6.

ACT Expo 2015 takes place May 4-7 at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas.

ACT Expo full conference registrations are discounted until Friday, March 13.
