Quantum Is Supplying 123-DGE Back-of-Cab/Rail Fuel Systems
Tops Friendly Markets and American Natural Gas are celebrating the completion of a new compressed natural gas fueling station in Lancaster, N.Y. east of Buffalo. Tops has committed to replacing its entire 55-unit fleet with CNG fueled Freightliner Cascadia trucks from Ryder. updated with new contact information on September 8
“This partnership with American Natural Gas and Ryder marks an important milestone in our distribution center’s history,” Tops senior VP for distribution and logistics Ron Ferri said in a company release.
“By introducing a new, natural gas-powered fleet, Tops Friendly Markets is positioning itself as a socially responsible and environmentally-conscious company,” Ferri said.
‘Set the Pace for the Grocery Industry’
The company expects to cut its annual fuel bill in half.
“This Tops project is going to set the pace for the grocery industry,” ANG CEO Drew West said in his company’s announcement. “The state-of-the-art, heavy-duty CNG fueling station and strategy will save fuel and protect the environment,” he said. “We look forward to a continued partnership distinguished by client satisfaction and operational expertise.”
ANG said it is leasing the property for the CNG station from Tops and ANG owns, operates, and maintains the facility.
ANG cites “an extensive RFP process” for the Tops station and says it was selected based on its “expertise in designing customized, cold weather-reliable systems.
“These systems feature two points of temperature compensation and top-of-the-line Cobey Energy compressors” – for which ANG is the exclusive distributor.
Cobey & Bennett
The twin 400-horsepower Cobey compressors at the new private station have a combined output of approximately 2400 SCFM (17 GGE/gasoline gallon equivalents), ANG says, and as such “will meet the high-flow needed for the narrow time windows Tops’ class 8 tractors have to fuel up.”
Tops is expected to use a minimum of 1.2 million diesel gallon equivalents of CNG per year, ANG adds, “making this one of the largest CNG stations in New York state and the country.”
ANG is using dispensers from Bennett Pump.
National Fuel for Gas and Funding
The new Tops Freightliner tractors have 11.9-liter ISX12 G engines from Cummins Westport and 123-DGE fuel systems from Quantum. Fuel is stored in both rail-mounted and back-of-cab units, as drivers asked that the trucks’ rear windows not be obstructed.
ANG is based in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Compressor supplier Cobey is likewise a New York State company. The two finalized a CNG equipment supply agreement last year (F&F, September 30, 2014).
Ryder, says Tops, is the leader in natural gas vehicle solutions for the commercial transportation industry, with more than 27 million miles of experience, 14 natural gas vehicle maintenance facilities, and 260 natural gas vehicle trained technicians.
The CNG station and fleet replacement has the financial support of National Fuel Gas Distribution Corp, the utility segment of National Fuel Gas Company, Tops says.
The supplier has seen a 2,000% increase in CNG use in the last five years, National Fuel assistant VP John Polka says in the Tops announcement.
Tops Friendly Markets is a full-service grocery retailer serving customers in upstate New York, northern Pennsylvania, and western Vermont. Its CNG fleet project with Ryder and ANG was announced last year (F&F, November 26, 2014).
