Program for Vans, Pickups and Bi-Fuel Impala Concludes,
The Goal Now Is More Vehicle Choices, Propane Autogas Too

Watch for General Motors to devise a new program for gaseous fuel vehicles, offering propane autogas as an option as well as compressed natural gas, with a broader range of body styles and options overall.

GM showed no natural gas vehicles at ACT Expo 2016 last week. Pictured here is a Chevrolet Bolt battery-electric on show at the event in Long Beach, Calif.

That’s the word from GM gaseous fuel fleet product manager Mike Jones, who spoke with F&F from this week’s GM fleet product preview in San Antonio.

“We concluded our current program,” he says – orders for GM’s dedicated-CNG vans, bi-fuel pickups, and bi-fuel Chevy Impala sedans are no longer being taken.

‘Flexibility’

“We’re not out of this,” Jones says. “What we’re trying to do is work a strategy that will give the flexibility [customers] need.”

Fuel prices will rise again, he says, and when they do GM will offer a broader mix of vehicles able to run on CNG or propane, or with gasoline-propane or gasoline-CNG bi-fuel systems.
