There is a firm contract for 199 buses, supported by FTA/Federal Transit Administration money, New Flyer says, with options for 197 buses over five years.
The new transit vehicles will have CNG fuel cylinders from Agility Fuel Solutions (formerly Hexagon). Hexagon and New Flyer disclosed a supply agreement for lightweight all-composite Type IV cylinders in early 2016 (F&F, February 26, 2016).
A Decade of Experience in the Valley
It’s the second joint procurement by Valley Metro and the City of Phoenix, New Flyer says: “For over ten years, New Flyer has provided public transportation in Arizona that helped support regional and city growth,” New Flyer of America president Wayne Joseph said in a release.
The CNG buses “ will help lower emissions, as well as strengthen transit ridership in communities with safe and reliable bus service,” he said.
The buses will be deployed on Valley Metro’s regional transit system as well as City of Phoenix routes starting 2018, and support Valley Metro’s 2016-2020 strategic plan to grow transit ridership and advance the value of transit.
