Chicago Wants Battery Trash Trucks

March 9, 2012 in Electric Drive, EVs by Rich Piellisch  |  No Comments

The City of Chicago, long interested in battery electric garbage trucks to reduce both air and noise pollution, has asked for bids from suppliers of numerous types of waste-related vehicles – all to be pure electrics.

They did it in France, why not Chicago?

The city is looking into light, medium and heavy vehicle chassis to be upfitted later, and also seeks information on available battery electric step vans, box trucks, stake trucks, aerial service and other vehicles, including pickups. Bids are to exclude pricing information, as vehicles will be purchased via a “reverse auction” to be held later.

Initial proposals under RFQ 3859/Specification 98782 are due April 18.

A pre-bid conference is slated for March 21.
