Utilimaster will do the bodies on a new Smith Electric Vehicles model, with FedEx Express the lead customer for the 14,000- to 26,000-pound Newton Step Van. The new Newton model is tailored to FedEx route requirements, but retains 90% parts commonality with the current production chassis. This helps keep costs down, said Smith EVs CEO Bryan Hansel.

Like other Smith EVs, the battery electric step van is promoted as having a single-charge range of 100 miles. Batteries are supplied by A123 Systems.

Separately, Enova Systems said last week that it’s supplying drive components to Smith. Enova also publicized a five-year supply deal with Remy for motors.

Hansel said the Newton chassis has a list price of $65,000 stripped or $75,000 with cabover. Battery packs are priced separately. The Newton step van, he says, will open up a new market.
