IPC Shows V2G at NREL

Technology Shown in Conjunction with Toyota Event

Austin, Texas-based Ideal Power Converters is taking the occasion of this week’s Toyota Sustainable Mobility Seminar to demonstrate its vehicle-to-grid capabilities, and its bi-directional Battery Converter unit, at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado.

Experiments conducted on DC bi-directional charging and communications at NREL’s Vehicle Testing and Integration Facility.

V2G can allow electric vehicles to exchange power with the electricity grid, providing benefits like local peak demand reduction. It’s likely to be adopted first for fleet vehicles, IPC says.

“The NREL and IPC V2G demonstration is unique in that it not only proves technical capability, but also highlights its economic viability,” the firm adds. IPC’s patented Battery Converter employs indirect power converter topology and a “Universal Power Converter Platform,” which IPC says uses “a standard highly-efficient, low-cost hardware platform to address multiple markets with only embedded software modifications.”

J1772-Compliant

The technology is used too in solar photovoltaic equipment, including a new installation at an NREL parking facility, IPS says.

The Battery Converter weighs less than 100 pounds, and will begin shipping following industry certifications next year. It will work with conventional DC fast chargers and will incorporate the new SAE J1772 “combo” connector, which was also announced this week.

“It is part of IPC’s strategy to offer highly-efficient, low-cost modular power converters for photovoltaic, grid storage, and EV fast charging that will improve efficiency and cost of hybrid energy systems,” IPC CEO Paul Bundschuh said in a release.
