OCA Hopes to Remedy a Fundamental Mistake of Early EV Proponents
Citing the bankruptcy of Ecotality (disclosed on September 16) and the recent demise of Better Place (F&F, May 27), a new organization – the Open Charge Alliance – has been formed to help other industry players avoid a repeat of their mistakes.
“Both were early pioneers in the EV charging space,” states an OCA advance notice, and “many believe their fatal flaw was the closed network model adopted by both.
“Rather than making all chargers available to all drivers and providing site hosts the flexibility to mix and match different types of chargers to specific needs,” OCA says, “Ecotality and Better Place ended up frustrating drivers by enforcing ‘member-only’ policies and have now left more than 12,000 stranded chargers for site hosts to deal with.”
Open Standards Urged
OCA, with members including ABB and Eaton, will urge EV companies worldwide to adopt “an open standards approach to EV charging.”
A kick-off announcement is slated for tomorrow and further details will be released at EPRI’s Plug-In 2013 meeting, which runs September 30-October 3 in San Diego.
