Total Number of Plug-Ins on U.S. Roads Doubled in the Past Year

The total number of plug-in electric vehicles on American roads has doubled since this time last year, the Electric Drive Transportation Association reports.

According to EDTA sales data, 222,590 plug-in vehicles have been sold since mass market roll-out in late 2010. That number reflects 99% growth over the 111,962 sold thru June 2013.

In a single year-over-year comparison, 110,628 plug-ins were sold from July 2013 through June 2014, a 46% increase over the 76,045 sold between July 2012 and June 2013.

Sales of plug-in vehicles reached 11,493 last month, including 4,982 battery electric vehicles and 6,511 plug-in hybrids, EDTA says.
