That’s Orange EV’s Pitch to Yard Hostler Operators
Taking Advantage of the Drive Clean Chicago Program
A fully battery electric yard hostler can be had for about the cost of a diesel vehicle if operators take advantage of the Drive Clean Chicago program, says Kansas City-based Orange EV.
The T-Series remanufactured hostler is the only vehicle in the category eligible for Chicago’s federally backed program, Orange EV says.
Drive Clean Chicago offers credits of up to $150,000 per vehicle. Thus, “You’re paying less than the cost of a diesel and your saving from day one on fuel and maintenance,” says Orange EV chief commercial officer Mike Saxton.
Two Versions Available
That’s for the $199,500 SD/standard duty T-Series vehicle, he notes. The ED/extended duty T-Series version is priced at $239,500.
The difference is double range, Saxton told F&F, with a 160-kilowatt-hour lithium ion battery pack in lieu of the SD’s 80-kilowatt-hour unit. The T-Series remanufactured truck can be based on Capacity of Texas or Kalmar Ottawa chassis.
‘Dog, Shifter, Buggy and More’
Orange EV promotes its vehicle, variously known as a “hostler, yard truck, mule, spotter, yard horse, yard dog, shifter, buggy and more,” for LTL less-than-load freight transportation (ideal for the SD, Saxton says), distribution, manufacturing, and intermodal services.
The products been tested in all of the segments. “These customer tests showed that an electric terminal truck can reliably do the job of current diesel trucks while delivering far greater value,” states a release.
Fuel Savings Said to Amount to 90% or Better
Once purchased, fuel savings can amount to more than 90%, the company says.
The Drive Clean Chicago program is run by the City of Chicago with the support of Calstart. Funding comes from the Federal Highway Administration’s CMAQ/Congestion Mitigation Air Quality initiative.
