400 San Diego Electric Smarts Being Replaced with Generation III Model
As Point-to-Point Fleet Passes Milestone of One Million Rentals Since 2011

Daimler is renewing its all-electric Car2Go car-sharing fleet in San Diego. Car2Go offers point-to-point service – rentals can commenced and cars parked at conclusion anywhere within the local service area. The San Diego area now covers 45 square miles – all served with 100% battery-power Electric Smart Fortwo cars.

Daimler has begun updating its Car2Go fleet of some 400 all-battery Electric Smart Fortwo cars in San Diego with Generation III vehicles.

The fleet of approximately 400 two-seaters is the largest electric car-share fleet in the U.S.

Daimler is replacing the San Diego fleet’s original all-battery Smart Fortwo cars with Generation III models (aka ED3), which have 17.6 kilowatt-hour lithium ion battery packs from Daimler’s Deutsche Accumotive, and a 55-kilowatt electric motor.

“The new fleet of four hundred powerful 2014 models, an upgrade from [the] 2010 model, will provide members a refreshed Car2Go experience when driving from Point A to Point B,” states a release.

30,000 San Diego Members

“We’re in-fleeting the new cars and de-fleeting the Generation IIs,” says Car2Go San Diego location manager Will Berry.

The service was launched in late 2011 (F&F, November 28, 2011), since which time Daimler has logged more than a million San Diego Car2Go rentals. “We’ve now more than 30,000 members in the San Diego region,” Berry told F&F.

The new 2014 vehicles, while maintaining the zero-emissions footprint, have a much smoother acceleration, and overall, a more comfortable Car2Go driving experience, he says.

Blink Units from the Car Charging Group

Daimler maintains a central depot for the fleet adjacent to its Car2Go office in downtown San Diego. There are 38 “Blink” Level II chargers there from the Car Charging Group. Customers get incentives to park in the central district so that the cars may be more easily collected for charging. Cars with a charge of less than 20% do not appear on customers’ locator apps.

Apps have been upgraded to allow members to not only search for and reserve a Car2Go vehicle, but begin and end their Car2Go trips via their smartphones.

Car2Go vehicles are available in approximately 30 world cities. Like San Diego, the Car2Go fleets in Amsterdam and Stuttgart are all-EV. There are ten battery Smart Fortwo cars in Portland, Ore. and eight in Austin, Texas.
