Envision Solar Provides Solar-Powered EV Chargers for Free Demos
San Francisco’s Charge Across Town organization has launched the Driving on Sunshine campaign using equipment from Envision Solar to provide free, solar-powered electric vehicle charging in highly visible locations throughout 2015.
“This innovative program allows the City of San Francisco to demonstrate that electric vehicles can charge from 100% renewable sources, with no impact to the electric grid and with absolutely zero emissions,” San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee said in a Charge Across Town release.
“Driving on Sunshine is a perfect example of taking innovative action to protect the climate,” he said. Lee helped launch the Driving on Sunshine program at an event on San Francisco’s Embarcadero this past Friday.
Mobile Autonomous Chargers
Three EV Arc (electric vehicle autonomous renewable charger) units from San Diego-based Envision will be placed around San Francisco, at predetermined sites, each for a three-month time period.
The mobile units are to collect data on frequency and duration of use. “The Driving on Sunshine team will evaluate usage reports at the end of the campaign, inform the City on its findings, and will donate units to the host sites determined to have the most impact.”
Charge Across Town is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting electric transportation in the San Francisco Bay Area. Its Driving on Sunshine project is supported by the San Francisco Department of the Environment with funding from the 11th Hour Project, a program of Schmidt Family Foundation.
