Dates TBD for Extension of Smart Service to Bay Area
Daimler’s Car2Go continues to discuss deployment of its car-share service with officials in San Francisco, with hopes of an announcement in the coming months.
Car2Go offers Daimler Smart cars for hire, employing an innovative “free-floating” system that allows the vehicles to be parked anywhere in the service area, not necessarily where they were picked up.
At issue in every Car2Go city is conformance with local parking regulations, a spokeswoman notes.
Some Cities Have Smart Electric Cars
Car2Go operates in 29 cities including 14 in North America. The Car2Go fleets in Amsterdam and San Diego (F&F, January 30) employ the 100% battery-powered Smart Electric.
There are several battery Smart Electric cars in the Car2Go organization’s North American headquarters of Austin, Texas, as well as in Portland, Ore. and Vancouver. In addition to the all-electric fleet in Amsterdam, there are limited numbers of Smart Electric cars in several other European cities.
Paul DeLong was named president of Car2Go North America this past March. He has been with the organization since the program’s launch in 2009.
