UQM PowerPhase Pro 135 Drive Units for All-Battery Vans
And R410 Fuel Cell Compressor Systems for Hydrogen Buses
UQM Technologies reports increased orders for its PowerPhase Pro 135 drives for battery electric vans by Zenith Motors, citing a new medium duty truck order for the Kentucky-based zero-emission vehicle developer. UQM also reported shipped the first complete fuel cell compressor systems to Ballard Power Systems.

“Zenith has ramped up their production and we are seeing new orders to meet this increasing customer demand,” UQM interim CEO and president Joe Mitchell said in a release. “Zenith has taken the time to do these vehicles right, and now the follow-on orders show their growth.”
The UQM PowerPhase Pro 135 peak torque of 340 newton meters (250 foot pounds) with 135 kilowatts peak power (181 horsepower) and 60 kilowatts continuous power (80 horsepower). UQM also offers production-ready PowerPhase HD systems for heavier commercial vehicle and electric bus applications.
‘High Efficiency Provides Higher Value’
“The high efficiency of UQM PowerPhase systems provides higher value to the customer, as well as enables vehicle manufacturers to meet their all-electric range goals and compliance with stricter emissions standards,” the company says.
UQM says that Zenith’s fully electric shuttle and cargo vans can travel up to 60 miles per hour with a range from 90 to 120 miles per charge (depending on battery options). The shuttle van seats up to 11 passengers. The cargo van has a payload capacity of 3,000 pounds.
“Zenith Electric vans are saving fleet operators an estimated $100,000 over 300,000 miles,” UQM says.
“A lot of our customers have placed multi-vehicle orders,” Zenith sales VP Christine Smith told F&F.
UQM said Tuesday that its compressor modules are a key component of Ballard’s hydrogen fuel cell systems for buses, noting that the UQM R410 fuel cell compressor unit is designed for fuel cell stacks up to 150 kilowatts.
Complete Fuel Cell Compressor Systems
“UQM recently shipped the first production units of the complete fuel cell compressor system to Ballard,” Mitchell said.
“Supplying the complete fuel cell compressor system, including the motor, controller, compressor and associated software, provides us with a competitive advantage where we can leverage the technology to gain market share not only with Ballard but with other major OEM customers that are showing interest.”
The follow-on orders from Ballard are to be fulfilled during the next Quarter, UQM said.
