GM is promising significantly more all-electric range for the 2016 Chevy Volt, as well as ‘a sleeker, sportier design.’

“Chevrolet expects many next-generation Volt owners will use power solely from their batteries for more than 90% of trips,” states a release. “Today, Volt owners use battery power on 80% of their trips.”

The 2016 Volt will have a new, 18.4-kilowatt-hour lithium ion battery, up from 17.1 kilowatt-hours this year. The car is to be rated at a combined 106 MPGe, or gasoline equivalent.

‘We Listened to Our Customers’

Batteries aside, the 2016 Volt’s 1.5-liter range-extender engine (up from 1.4 liters this year) will accept regular unleaded fuel. The vehicle will have a combined EPA-estimated fuel efficiency of 42 MPG.

“We listened to our customers,” vehicle chief engineer Andrew Farah says in a release. “They were very clear when they told us that they wanted more range.”
