New Motor Variant ‘to Tackle Extreme Duty Cycles’

UQM Technologies is claiming a “leap in technology” with the addition of a new HD(+) variant to its line of PowerPhase electric motors. HD(+) “offers the ability to tackle extreme duty cycles with up to 25% improved continuous power using water-glycol cooling medias preferred by most OEMs,” UQM says.

Zenith Motors, which has an order for 45 100% battery trucks for DHL Express U.S., and Proterra, with a growing line of fully battery-electric 'Catalyst' transit buses, are standout customers for UQM's PowerPhase driveline components.

HD(+) is applicable to all three of UQM’s PowerPhase HD systems, ranging up to 250 horsepower.

“The HD(+) systems are designed for customers that have the need for more continuous power to handle steep grades and the most demanding commercial drive cycles,” UQM COO and interim CEO Joseph Mitchell says in the new product announcement.

Better Grade and High Speed Performance

“The addition of the HD(+) technology to our product portfolio further strengthens our position as the provider of the highest quality and most technologically advanced electric drive motors and controllers in the global market, and offers our customers even better performance than existing record-setting systems,” Mitchell said.

“This breakthrough technological improvement offers further value to UQM’s best in class power density by enabling heavy weight Class 4 to Class 8 commercial vehicles and buses to dramatically improve grade ability and sustain higher, fully loaded top speeds,” states a release.
