King County Contract with Daimler Orion Transferred Over

As many as 381 buses for Seattle Metro Transit, a division of the King County Department of Transportation, will be built by New Flyer Industries rather than by Daimler Buses North America, New Flyer said Tuesday. Most will be series hybrid electric vehicles with HybriDrive brand drivelines from BAE Systems.

Daimler, which exited the North American transit bus market in late-April 2012, has assigned the work to New Flyer. A contract for 74 compressed natural gas Orion badge buses by Daimler for New York City Transit was shifted to New Flyer last year too (F&F, December 7).

“We are pleased that we could respond to DBNA’s transition plan with a solution that met the needs of King County, while ensuring that expectations regarding our current bus production run are met,” New Flyer president and CEO Paul Soubry said in a release.

King County Metro’s initial order under the assigned contract consists of 60 heavy-duty 35-foot buses and 60 heavy- duty 40-foot diesel-electric hybrid buses,” New Flyer says.

215 More Hybrids for Seattle

Also according to New Flyer, the contract, which expires on June 30, 2014, “includes remaining base order buses consisting of a combination of 181 35-foot and 40-foot diesel-electric hybrid buses, as well as 200 option buses consisting of a combination of 35-foot and 40-foot buses.” Those buses may or not be hybrids, at King Country’s discretion.

King County, says agency consultant Steve Policar, plans to buy a total of 215 hybrids. Order are to include 60 of New Flyers 35-foot buses and 60 of the manufacturer’s 40-foot buses in the first two orders, with 95 additional 40-foot hybrid vehicles to follow.

The reassigned order comes in addition to New Flyer’s existing contract with King County for 43 of the firm’s 60-foot buses in production now with anticipated delivery in the second quarter of 2013, New Flyer noted. The busbuilder said it has delivered 995 buses to King Country since May 2000.

And, “This award assignment marks the first Xcelsior buses to be built for King County Metro’s fleet,” New Flyer said.
