Automaker Says It Will Be ‘the World’s Most Powerful and Cleanest SUV,’
‘A Plug-In Electric, Hybrid Car & High-Performance Car Rolled into One’
“There has never been an SUV offering this level of power this cleanly,” says Volvo Cars, which is promising a new version of its XC90 SUV. The exterior is to be unveiled, with world availability timings, on August 26.
The top-of-the-range “Twin Engine T8” version of the seven-seat vehicle will feature a 2-liter four-cylinder supercharged and turbocharged gasoline engine powering the front wheels with an 80-horsepower/60-kilowatt electric motor driving the rear, combining for up to 400 horsepower.
The XC90 will be available with a diesel and gasoline engine options as well – Volvo is touting new SPA – scalable product architecture – chassis technology.
“There are no compromises when you drive an all-new XC90,” Volvo Car Group senior R&D VP Peter Mertens says in a release. “In the past you could either have power or low CO2 emissions. But with the all-new XC90 you can have both.”
“We have created a family of intelligent petrol and diesel engines with power curves that give exciting driveability at the same time as delivering world-beating fuel economy,” added Dr. Mertens. “With seven people in the new XC90, carbon dioxide emissions per person and kilometer are outstandingly low.”
“Since our new SPA technology is designed from the start to accommodate electrification technologies, the Twin Engine installation does not compromise luggage or passenger space,” Mertens said.
