Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Getting Sixty 40-Footers
With BAE ‘Series E’ Anti-Idling for Lower Emissions, Quieter Operations
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority – aka The T – has exercised options and will receive 60 heavy duty 40-foot heavy-duty Xcelsior brand transit buses from New Flyer Industries with HybriDrive brand series hybrid electric drives from BAE Systems. updated September 2
The new buses will be the first of the “best-in-class” Xcelsior line, New Flyer president and CEO Paul Soubry said in a release.
New Flyer says it’s built and delivered 352 heavy-duty transit buses to MBTA in 40-foot and 60-foot lengths, with propulsion systems ranging from diesel to diesel-hybrid and natural gas.
‘Clean and Quiet Boarding’
“MBTA will be receiving Series-E, our latest low emission, efficient, fuel-saving system,” BAE HybriDrive VP Steve Trichka said in the New Flyer announcement.
“With Series-E, passengers experience clean and quiet boarding with new anti-idling technology deployed at bus stops.”
BAE “has nearly 4,500 HybriDrive propulsion systems powering buses around the world,” Trichka said.
BAE and engine partner Cummins introduced a start-stop system for HybriDrive buses just this summer (F&F, August 5).
The sixty 40-foot hybrid buses for MBTA will be manufactured starting in the third quarter of 2014 with all delivered in the first quarter of 2015, New Flyer Said.
