167 More New Flyer Hybrids for SF Muni

167 More Buses as All Contract Options Are Exercised

San Francisco has exercised the remaining options under a December 2014 contract and will take delivery of an additional 167 diesel-fueled hybrid electric buses, says manufacturer New Flyer.

SFMTA, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency – best known as SF Muni – is among the agencies now using renewable diesel.

SFMTA, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency – best known as SF Muni – has now exercised all of the options from a December 2014 contract with New Flyer for diesel-fueled hybrid electric buses.


The exercised options are valued at nearly $153 million, New Flyer says. The order is the fourth under the contract, and includes 98 forty-foot and 69 sixty-foot diesel-electric hybrid buses.

The buses are operated by Muni, the San Francisco Municipal Railway, overseen by SFMTA, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.

265 Hybrid Buses Ordered This Year

Muni exercised options for 98 New Flyer hybrids – 54 forty-foot XDE40 and 44 sixty-foot XDE60 Xcelsior vehicles with parallel hybrid electric drivelines from Allison Transmission earlier his year (F&F, March 17).

“With the conclusion of this order, all options available in this contract will be exercised,” New Flyer says.
