Michigan’s Crazy Diamond Performance is tackling the challenge of converting new-generation direct injection engines to natural gas operation – and is proving the technology on eye-catching CNG hot rods.

“We have successfully developed and are currently testing a new method of operation for using gaseous fuels in a DI engine,” says CDP president Kevin Fern.

The custom upfitter and technical services provider is publicizing patent-pending low-pressure DI technology – “a new method of injection” – allowing such gaseous fuels as natural gas/methane, hydrogen or propane autogas to be injected directly into the combustion chamber.

‘Removes Some of the Complexity’

“The CDP LPDI system,” Fern says in a release, “will help change the alternative fuel industry, by expanding vehicle offerings… [It] opens previously untapped markets for adaption of alternative fuels.”

CDP’s LPDI system “removes some of the complexity normally associated with the DI engine architecture” – there is no need for high pressure nor to revert to port injection.

Fern told F&F that he plans to show a 480-horsepower CNG-fueled ’32 Ford-based vehicle at the Autorama show in Detroit March 7-9. “The hot rods help spread the word about natural gas to the average Joe,” he says.
