124 Hydrogen Fuel Cells for Fork Lifts at Alberta Facility
Plug Power said Tuesday that its has “an expansion contract” with Walmart Canada to provide 124 of its GenDrive hydrogen fuel cells for Walmart’s new High Velocity Distribution Center building in Balzac, Alberta, Canada.
“This expansion adds on to the fleet in operation since 2010 and brings the GenDrive total upwards of 230 units at the site,” Plug said.
The fuel cells make for increased productivity from lift truck fleets when compared with conventional lead acid batteries, Plug says: “Hydrogen fuel cells provide constant and consistent power to lift trucks, eliminating the need to change and charge batteries,” states a release.
GenFuel Hydrogen Generation Gear Too
Plug will also provide GenFuel hydrogen generation equipment to Walmart Canada to support the Balzac distribution center lift trucks. In addition to producing the elemental fuel, the proprietary GenFuel system provides diagnostic support to help monitor fleet fueling and operational metrics.
Plug describes an “extensive tenure” with Walmart: “In the United States, Plug Power has deployed more than 1,800 GenDrive units since the relationship began in 2007.
“By the end of the second quarter, Walmart will be using Plug Power hydrogen fuel cells in eight distribution centers, all of which are utilizing Plug Power’s GenFuel system.”
Uline, Inc. Is a New Plug Power Customer
Plug said in May that it’s providing its turnkey GenKey system for hydrogen-powered material handling to Uline, a distributor of shipping, industrial and packaging materials, and new Plug Power customer.
An initial deployment of GenDrive units are to power the forklift fleet at a Uline distribution center in Pleasant Prairie, Wisc., with a second fleet of GenDrive-powered lift trucks at a new facility in the coming months. Uline has twelve branches across the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
