GEP Unit with an 80-Kilowatt FCe80 Fuel Cell
US Hybrid reported an order at ACT Expo for a hydrogen fuel cell-powered street sweeper for Caltrans, the California Department of Transportation.
The sweeper is manufactured by Global Environmental Products in San Bernardino, Calif. using a 200-kilowatt driveline assembled by US Hybrid in Torrance, Calif. The unit’s freeze-capable 80-kilowatt FCe80 fuel cell is manufactured by US Hybrid in Windsor, Conn.
The order “is the result of a successful five-year demonstration and operation of the diesel hybrid electric street sweeper for the New York Department of Sanitation since 2009,” US Hybrid says (F&F, May 10, 2014), “with the last fleet including the export power for powering the building and tools during emergency situations.”
Lower Fuel Consumption & Quieter
“The fuel cell street sweeper will reduce fuel consumption to less than half with fast fueling and 24/7 operation,” states a release. “The fuel cell electric design is more operator-friendly and reliable with significant reductions in operating noise and reduced fuel and maintenance costs.”
“US Hybrid’s proven power electric powertrain and fuel cell engine technology will provide Caltrans with clean, quiet sweepers that will dramatically reduce street-level emissions,” said US Hybrid president and CEO Abas Goodarzi.
“US Hybrid focuses on niche applications that will be most benefited by zero emission technology,” he said.
“The street sweeper’s low speeds, curbside presence, and power demand make it an optimal application to showcase the fuel savings and zero emission that our products provide.”
US Hybrid also unveiled a Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell truck at last week’s ACT Expo, and announced a new joint venture with China’s Jiangsu Dewei Advanced Materials (F&F, May 6).
ACT Expo 2018 – the next Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo – has been scheduled for April 30-May 3, 2018 – again at Southern California’s Long Beach Convention Center.
