It’s the World’s First Built for the Purpose, Company Says,
And Will Soon Sail from Korea to Europe Under LNG Power
Engie and partners are talking up the delivery in Korea of “the world’s first purpose built liquefied natural gas bunkering vessel.”
Engie Zeebrugge is to support Baltic Sea operations of two pure car and truck carriers operated by Norway-based UECC – United European Car Carriers, which took delivery of two LNG-diesel dual fuel PCTCs late last year (F&F, January 17).
“She will run on LNG for her maiden voyage, after a few days of loading LNG delivered by trucks at the shipyard,” states a release from Engie, Fluxys, Mitsubishi, and NYK.
5,000 Cubic Meters Capacity
The 353-foot (107.60 meters) Engie Zeebrugge was built by Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction at the Yeongdo shipyard in Busan.
The BV/Bureau Veritas-classed, Belgium-flagged bunker vessel can carry 5,000 cubic meters – upwards of 1.3 million gallons – of LNG.
Wärtsilä 20 DF Engines
Engie Zeebrugge will load LNG at the Fluxys LNG terminal in Zeebrugge and be operated by NYK.
The pioneering bunker vessel is powered by twin 9L20DF dual fuel engines by Wärtsilä, says Engie LNG commercial manager Anton Aarts.
The vessel’s deployment is a “milestone in the development of the European LNG bunkering chain,” states the Engie Zeebrugge announcement, as “LNG-fueled ships up to now have been largely dependent on fixed bunker locations or the limited bunkering capacity of LNG trailers.”
The partners also noted yesterday that this past September they established the brandname “Gas4Sea” as a marketing took for ship-to-ship LNG bunkering services worldwide – starting with the Engie Zeebrugge in Northern Europe (HHP Insight, September 9, 2016).
“Under this common brand, the three partners intend to support the development of LNG as a marine fuel, thus contributing to an environmentally friendly maritime industry.”
