VPG had the backing of the U.S. Department of Energy and investors including Clean Energy Fuels for its wheelchair-accessible vehicles.

According to USA Today, citing former CEO John Walsh, VPG “stopped operations after finances dipped below the minimum required as a condition of the government loan … Though about 100 staff were laid off and its offices shuttered, the company has not filed for bankruptcy reorganization.”

The Detroit Free Press, also citing Walsh, said that VPG’s assets are for sale.
