It will be the third such workshop in Kazakhstan since 2011, states a notice from the Energy Department’s Office of International Affairs and the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

Since 2011, DoE reports, Almaty Electrotrans, the municipal bus company of the city of Almaty, has deployed 200 compressed natural gas-fueled buses, supported by a $35 million loan from European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Buses from China

AET awarded the bus contract to Zhengzhou Yutong, a Chinese company that uses Cummins Westport’s 8.3-liter C Gas Plus natural gas engines for the Kazakh vehicles.

The company plans to deploy more than 600 CNG buses in Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city.

And, “There is the potential for sizeable deployment of natural gas vehicles in other Kazakh cities,” DoE says.

Cooperation between the United States and Kazakhstan in the transport sector is an initiative of the U.S.-Kazakhstan Energy Partnership, which is chaired by U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel Poneman and Minister of Oil and Gas Sauat Mynbayev.

KazTransGas names Korea’s Colon as a partner for the first five CNG fueling stations in Almaty, using compressors form and KwanShin (Korea) and New Zealand’s Intermech. The KazTransGas website indicates that an additional 95 are planned through 2015.
