First Automated Transmission for a U.S. Spark-Ignition Natural Gas Engine

Eaton has unveiled an integrated powertrain package with automated transmission for trucks powered by the ISX12 G natural gas engine by Cummins Westport. The package with Eaton’s UltraShift Plus transmission provides customers “with the first automated transmission to be paired with a spark-ignited natural gas engine in the North American market.”

Eaton and Cummins Westport announced the UltraShift Plus automated transmission for trucks with the 11.9-liter spark-ignition ISX12 G natural gas engine at the American Trucking Associations’ Technology & Maintenance Council meeting in Nashville.

The new powertrain is to be available in limited application release for linehaul and regional haul in mid-year. It “will meet a growing market need while providing best-in-class technology,” states an Eaton release.

Eaton’s UltraShift Plus is based on its Fuller 10-speed manual with an electronic clutch actuator to provide faster shifting and smoother engagement. It affords “better launch and shift decisions through grade-sensing, weight computation and driver throttle commands,” Eaton says.

The ISX12 G-UltraShift Plus driveline was unveiled at this week’s American Trucking Associations’ annual Technology & Maintenance Council meeting in Nashville (F&F, February 19). The TMC gathering continues through the morning of Thursday, March 13.
