California’s $10.2 Million Incentive Program for NGVs Opens Friday

The California Energy Commission-funded Natural Gas Vehicle Incentive Project opens for business for private and public non-transit applicants on Friday, August 7. NGVIP is being administered on behalf of CEC by the Institute of Transportation Studies, at UC Irvine.

NGVIP has $10,187,000 available “to reduce the purchase price of new on-road natural gas vehicles.” CEC wants to expand the use of “a domestically produced non-petroleum fuel that is a low-cost alternative to gasoline and diesel and has lower carbon emissions characteristics.”

“The incentives are available on a first-come, first-served basis and at varying levels depending on the gross vehicle weight,” CEC says.

$25,000 Maximum

NGVIP incentives range from $1,000 for the lightest natural gas vehicles to $25,000 for NGVs with a GVW in excess of 33,001 pounds.

To be eligible, vehicles must be new, model year 2014 or later. The vehicle must also be listed in CARB’s Certification Program and must be registered and operated on natural gas in California (at least 90% of the time) for at least three years. They vehicles must have engines prepped for natural gas with fully warranted fuel systems.

Only vehicles purchased after August 7th and earning approval from the CEC will be receive the incentives.
